Product Description
Product description
The whole world is watching--literally--every time Truman Burbank makes the slightest move. Unbeknownst to him, in this hauntingly funny film by Peter Weir, his entire life has been an unending soap opera for consumption by the rest of the world. And everyone he knows--including his mother, his wife, and his best friend--is really an actor, paid to be part of his life. In this intriguing and surprisingly touching 1998 film, writer Andrew Niccol imagines an ultimate kind of celebrity, then sees it brought to life with comic intensity and emotional honesty by Jim Carrey in what may be the performance of his career. Carrey has exceptional support from Laura Linney and Ed Harris, but it's his show, in a portrayal that demonstrates just what kind of range Carrey is capable of. "--Marshall Fine"

The film's premise, revolving around Truman living his entire life unknowingly as the star of a reality show, is both thought-provoking and unsettling. Carrey's performance captures Truman's journey from blissful ignorance to a profound realization with sincerity and authenticity.
Director Peter Weir's visionary storytelling unfolds seamlessly, blending satire, drama, and philosophical inquiry. The set design, particularly the simulated world of Seahaven, is a testament to the film's meticulous attention to detail, creating a world that blurs the lines between reality and illusion.
The brilliance of "The Truman Show" lies not only in its concept but also in its exploration of profound themes such as free will, the nature of reality, and the ethical implications of entertainment. As Truman questions his reality, the audience is compelled to reflect on their own lives and the influences that shape their perceptions.
The supporting cast, including Ed Harris as the manipulative creator Christof, adds depth to the narrative. The film's emotional resonance is amplified by a poignant score that complements the on-screen drama.
"The Truman Show" is a timeless classic that remains relevant, prompting viewers to question societal norms and the authenticity of their own experiences. Carrey's performance, coupled with the film's innovative storytelling, cements it as a must-watch that continues to captivate audiences with its wit, wisdom, and emotional impact.
At least then I could see a court case connected with this production.
I live less than 20 miles from where this was shot, and worked for the production. At the time a lot of the rules on set seemed really idiotic, I learned year after this that Jim is a deep method actor. What at the time I took as him just being a Hollywood douchebag, was actually his process. He never attended cast/crew functions or any other functions AFAIK. At the end of shooting he did thank everyone and I got the opportunity to meet him and shake his rather large hand.
Nice enough guy then, but I hear he is having a really rough these days. I wish him the best, hoping to see a chance for him laugh again.
But there is a dark side this film....
There were about 5 locations in the eastern Walton/Western and Central Bay county area. The scene where the boat pokes through the wall was filmed on a large set built at the Northwestern foot of Hathaway Bridge. ADR is a beautiful thing. That scene was shot early on a Sunday, at low traffic. The thing was, NOBODY CARED! I am serious! Everyone knew who it was, but just didn't care. I remember Weir himself stating that the locals "Were a bunch of braindead right wing rednecks." and "If a bomb fell on this place it would be an improvement." In the end the production company was run out of town on a rail for the director's statements and some other really nasty things. Then, they failed to pay most of the local extras, and the contracted craft services along with the security companies. Then the "company" folded leaving a lot of people in desperate straits. A local Security and catering company failed due to non payment. I also discovered, years later, the state taxes were never paid.
So neither county has had any film or TV production companies (Other than MTV during Spring Break. They paid their bills.) shoot here since. They actually passed laws about money being placed in an escrow account if you want to film here, effectively killing any interest by production companies to shoot here. I really was a huge film fan until I worked on this production. It killed any interest I had in pursuing TV/Film production. The studio people, producer, and director were a bunch of megalomaniac narcissistic scumbags that I really hoped would drown in a cesspool.
Sorry about the rant here, but I held this in for 24 years and seeing it here just dragged a lot I thought I had forgotten back to the surface.

The kids absolutely loved it and I had forgotten just how great this movie is and how relevant it remains.
For me the transfer was decent if unremarkable. There were a few shots that gave me that native 4k detail and intense colour vividness I have been spoiled by but for the most part I just had the feeling that it could look a bit better. Wide shots rarely had more than middling definition. Foliage and building textures were average mostly. Close ups fared the best but again fell flat and I feel a higher average bit rate may have helped elevate this one. I guess there are limitations with different camera/lenses/film stocks maybe in use throughout. I kept thinking...I wonder what Sony could have done with this transfer??
Occasionally low bit rates and some possible fltering to mask the chroma noise and wonky compression sometimes found on HDR10 base layers and that would seem to be the case here. I can't comment on Dolby Vision as I am not set up for this currently.
Paramount are the least consistent studio for 4K but on the whole a decent disk IMO.
