CONCERT FOR NEW YORK CITY, THE
Reviewed January 29th, 2002 by John Randall
What other concert can you get Paul McCartney, The Who, David Bowie, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, James Taylor, and many others?
If somehow you are one of the very few that missed The Concert for NYC – it was a mega star concert to raise money for the victims of the September 11th disaster.
No only is their a ton of great music, but great comedy by veterans like Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell and more.
You probably remember the “A Tribute to Heroes” telethon (how could you of missed it, it was on about twenty different channels simultaneously), which was similar in nature to what “The Concert for NYC” was, bringing in various stars and artists, from the new to the old, in an effort to raise money for the victims and families of those that were affected by the disasters of September 11th. The “A Tribute to Heroes” telecast was released on CD and DVD late last year, whereas just the audio CD for “The Concert for NYC” was released making us wonder when and if a DVD of the presentation would be released... it seems the wait is over. A two disc DVD set no less!
The video of the DVD is presented in 1.33:1 (full screen) format and blows the original broadcast away. Image is crystal clear and there doesn’t seem to be the littlest problem with the transfer.
The audio is really where these discs shine. Presented in both PCM uncompressed stereo and also a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix – both sides of the coin should be very happy. I actually enjoyed the 5.1 mix much more than the PCM track. Be careful – if you don’t choose 5.1 from the menu, it defaults to PCM. You can change it via the remote of course as well. The soundtrack was actually better than I thought it would be. It will give your sub a good workout – that is for sure. Surround channels are used mostly with audience noise, but this is a good soundtrack with different instruments being heard out of each front speaker.
Also, they have done a really nice job dividing up the chapter stops. There are 40 on each disc!
Sorry, but no extras were included – but who cares. Sure, some behind the scenes footage would be nice – but I’m not going to complain. This was a landmark event and it well preserved on DVD to last a lifetime.
Don’t forget that proceeds from this DVD go to the victims of the tragedy. Of course this set is highly recommended. It’s one damn good concert DVD.
