MAGNOLIA

For starters, this is a hard movie to explain without giving away any details. It is a mixed up story dealing with many different story lines.
The movie seems to be about betrayal, love, coincidence, being alone, trust, the past and how it can come back to haunt you.
This movie isn’t for everyone. There are so many story lines that you can get lost, but by the movie’s end it all comes together. It says on the back of the DVD that the ending is quite unforgettable – it is. It’s most amazing, but so is the story as a whole.
The movie is written and directed Paul Thomas Anderson who wrote and directed Boogie Nights. The movie stars a lot of the cast from Boogie Nights as well and introduces some new actors like Tom Cruise, Henry Gibson and Jason Robarbs. The cast was beautiful and so was the acting.
Throughout the entire movie are songs sung by Aimee Mann. Her voice is outstanding, especially singing songs like “One” and “Save Me”. One of the highlights of the whole movie is when the cast sings “Wise Up” with her. It’s wonderful.
The video is presented in 2.40:1 widescreen, which is 16x9 enhanced. The transfer is breathtaking and nothing is noticeably wrong with it at all.
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and does very well. Music sounds wonderful and the bass is nicely used.
This is a 2 disc DVD set and all the extras are on the 2nd disc. Extras include a documentary called “The Moment” which is a 74 minute behind-the-scenes look at the making of Magnolia, the full “Seduce & Destroy” infomercial with Frank T. Mackey (Tom Cruise), more of Frank's seminar, the music video “Save Me” by Aimee Mann, the teaser and theatrical trailer, and even 9 short TV previews. You might also want to watch the color bars section for a nifty little surprise.
Overall this is a great movie. New Line did an exceptional job on this one! The movie is rated R and runs about 3 hours long.
